DINALUPIHAN, Bataan – Pres. Aquino has asked the Department of Agriculture to produce enough rice for the country’s needs in three years, time to put a stop to rice importation, Usec. Joel Rudinas said Friday.

However, Rudinas said the target still depends on weather conditions, citing threat of climate change like typhoons and other environmental problems. Another concern he mentioned dealt on realities and capabilities of the agricultural sector.

He said the agricultural sector has to be calibrated for farmers to produce more.

Rudinas added that the president wanted to have a very sustainable agri-business activity for small farmers.

P-Noy, he said, has directed the Agriculture department under Sec. Proceso Alcala to fix investment, marketing and distribution chain so that transaction costs of farmers like the delivery and utilization of inputs, use of technology will result to bigger production.

The president also wants to minimize losses on post harvest, then, the produce to be brought to consolidation centers where wholesalers can meet with the wholesale producers or wholesale suppliers.

“Ang end result nito gaganahan ang magsasaka to produce, adopt and invest in production-enhancing technology dahil kumikita siya na nais ni P-Noy na mangyari sa mga rural areas o production centers,” Rudinas said.

He also said that if farmers always incur losses in their production, they will lose interest as if they are maltreated.

The DA official also said that if farmers are encouraged, “there will be stability in the agricultural sector and ensure food security and supply of agricultural products.”

Rudinas was guest during the launching of the soil conservation guided farm and tree planting in Payangan, a mountain here.
