CLARK FREEPORT – The officer-in-charge of the clearance department of the Bureau of Customs (BoC) in this freeport sustained two gunshot wounds but survived an attempt on his life when a still unidentified suspect fired at him at the BoC clearing area here at about 6:30 p.m. last Friday.

Senior Supt. Nicanor Targa, chief of the security and fire department of the Clark Development Corp. (CDC), identified the victim as Elizardo Cabilao, OIC of the clearance department in charge of approving the release of imported cargoes here.

Targa cited his investigators as saying that Cabilao was standing outside the BoC building when a gunman wearing short pants arrived on board a motorcycle and fired at him twice before fleeing. The bullets grazed Cabilao’s neck and wounded one of his arms.

Targa said the suspect apparently used a silencer in his .45 calibre pistol.

Outsiders who witnessed the shooting from afar told investigators that the suspect then fled on his motorcycle and that no one immediately helped the victim who fell on the pavement. Targa confirmed this, saying that CDC security personnel were the first to assist the victim 10 minutes later.

A check with the police indicated that Cabilao was once mauled by still unknown suspects in nearby Barangay Dau in Mabalacat town, amid reports that the victim had conflicts with some people within the BoC as well as people dealing with his office.

“There seemed to have been no commotion at the BoC after the shooting, as if nothing happened, Targa noted. No one from the BoC here was available for interview.

He said that apparently, the motorcycle used by the suspect was still within the freeport and that the suspect used another motorcycle with an accomplice to get out of Clark. Security checks were made tighter at all gates at Clark soon after the shooting incident was reported.

Cabilao was brought to a hospital in Angeles City for the treatment of his wounds.
