CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The chairman of the barangay comprising the downtown area of this city was shot dead by a lone gunman at around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 27.
Police said Jesus Liang, 63, chairman of Barangay Sto. Rosario, was walking across the newly-renovated city public market when the suspect approached and shot him in the head before escaping on foot toward V. Tiomico St. The scene of the crime is some 300 meters from city hall and the Metropolitan Cathedral.
City police chief Lt. Col. Preston Bagangan said a team has been dispatched to collect footage from CCTV cameras in the area as part of the ongoing investigation to determine the identity of the gunman and the motive for the killing.
Liang’s strict enforcement of order at the market is one of the angles being considered as motive for his slaying, police sources said.
Liang is on his third and last term in office. He was the second city barangay chief
killed this year. Last April, Barangay Alasas chairman Alvin Mendoza was killed in an ambush while campaigning for the city council. His wife Rosalie who substituted for him won the second top slot in the council. Punto News Team
