CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The city government here is promoting the use of a household biogas digester developed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU), using stove fueled by household wastes instead of liquefi ed petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking.
Mayor Edwin Santiago led recently here the launching of the project that installed at least three units of the biogas digester for pilot testing in chosen household. The launching was attended by officials from PSAU led by president Honorio Soriano Jr. and director for organic farming Dr. Norman De Jesus, and DOST Pampanga chief Michelle Quiambao.
Soriano said the household biodigester converts biodegradable wastes into gas that can be used in single-burner gas stoves.
“Layunin din nito na mabawasan yung ating dependence sa conventional energy, yung liquefi ed petroleum gas and ma-embrace yung problema natin sa ecological solid waste management and climate change. Sa pamamagitan nito, pwede na itong gamitin pangluto o sa kung ano man bagay na nangangailangan ng energy, kaya malaking bagay din ito,” he said.
The DOST, being a member of the City Solid Waste Management Board, selected this city for pilot testing for a project designed to reduce organic wastes.
City environment officer Regina Rodriguez said “the initiative of the local government is to find innovative ways and technology in achieving their environmental campaigns.”
Santiago thanked PSAU and DOST for choosing his city for the project, saying this could lead to zero waste objective of the city government.
