ANGELES CITY – Newspaper columnist Venerando “Bernie” S. Chavit, suspect in the killing of his pregnant wife and lover on Tuesday, expressed his intention to surrender to the police but vehemently denied that he was behind the double murder.

Chavit, columnist and contributing editor of the Angeles City-based Central Luzon Times weekly, on Wednesday told his fellow mediamen that he will “give myself up not to surrender but to clear my name.”

This came as Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said “it’s high time that Bernie should turn himself in to the PNP [Philippine National Police] to under investigation if he is not guilty.”

Chavit said he will present himself to the police “as soon as possible.” He spoke in a radio interview Wednesday morning expressing his innocence over the murder of Girlie David-Chavit 42, and Ernesto Del Rosario Briones, alyas “Takusa,” at his wife’s house at Timog Park Homes, Pampang, here.

Both victims were employees at the Angeles City hall. Girlie was reportedly seven months pregnant.

“Hihingi sana ako ng tulong sa inyo pare kung pwede. Lalantad ako to clear my name. Pupunta ako sa imbestigador para malaman ko kung ano kinakaso nila sa akin. Hindi pagsurender ha?

To clear my name lang. Wala pa namang warrant of arrest. Kaya lang kailangan marami akong kasamang mediamen pare. Doon din ako magbibigay ng statement,” said Chavit on his Facebook account.

“Yup! grabe nangyare (pagpatay). Hindi totoo lahat pare (na ako gumawa). Wala ako sa Angeles City pare (ng mangyare patayan). Nabalitaan ko na lang kinagabian.

Tiempo namang drain ako kaya di ko na receive ang mga txt (SMS messages) kaagad,” Chavit added when asked if he was behind the killing.

Bernie said he is “somewhere in Metro Manila” during the interview over GVFM 99.1.
