Collapsed in 2024, unfinished flood control project in danger again

ARAYAT, Pampanga – Repair and rehabilitation of the slope protection in Barangay Candating here that collapsed in August 2024 are yet to be completed and already it is in danger of a complete collapse with the onslaught rampaging waters of the Pampanga River wrought by the southwest monsoon and the recent series of weather disturbances.

On July 29, Gov. Lilia “Nanay” Pineda personally went on-site inspection and delivered relief packs to the 387 affected families.

Even as the governor lamented the delay in the project completion causing further anxiety and suffering to the residents on the riverbanks, she called on the Department of Public Works and Highways not only to facilitate “with utmost urgency” the repair of the slope but also to review similar infrastructures on implementation to check on their structural integrity.

The collapsed slope protection was under the 23CG0041 Flood Management Program—Construction/Rehabilitation of Flood Mitigation Facilities within Major River Basins and Principal Rivers funded with P91,485,522.95 by the General Appropriations Act. Construction started on March 4, 2024, with completion date set on Nov. 4, 2024.
