BALANGA CITY — The provincial government of Bataan effective Saturday banned cockfighting in the province as preventive measure against avian influenza virus or bird flu.

The temporary ban takes effect from August 19 to September 2, 2017.

“Nag-iingat siyempre ang Bataan sa bird fl u kaya pansamantalang sarado ang mga sabungan ng dalawang linggo,” said Alberto Dulot, maintenance man of Balanga Capital Cockpit.

He said it was time for them to do some repair works in the cockpit while the ban was in effect.

Gov. Albert Garcia issued a circular on the temporary ban on cockfighting and other related activities in Bataan.

“In view of the avian influenza outbreak in Pampanga and to contain the disease in the shortest possible time, cockfighting is temporarily banned in Bataan for two weeks,” the circular said.

From San Luis, Pampanga the virus has spread to Nueva Ecija. Bataan is one of the provinces in Central Luzon closest to Pampanga.

The Bataan police provincial office on Saturday called for a meeting of all cockpit operators from the towns of Dinalupihan, Orani, Abucay, Orion and Limay and the City of Balanga for the implementation of the temporary halt in cockfighting activities.

The cockpits on Sunday were closed and empty.
