ORION, Bataan – Scores of volunteers composed of government workers, cops and members of non-governmental organizations spearheaded the cleaning of the seashores of Bataan in observance of the International Clean-up Day on Saturday.

The clean-up was visible in one city and 11 towns in Bataan which all have coastal areas except Dinalupihan, the only landlocked municipality in the province.

Using rakes, shovels and brooms, the volunteers cleared the coastlines of varied kinds of wastes.  On standby were garbage trucks where sacks of trash were loaded.

At least 57 members of the Philippine Guardians focused their cleaning activities at Barangay Capunitan here where squatters reside on houses with bamboo posts standing on water from the sea. Manolo Aganan, president of the Guardians in Capunitan, said they were joining the clean-up drive in Manila Bay.

“Narito ang mga Guardians na nakahandang tumulong ng walang bayad sa paglilinis ng tabing dagat,” said the leader.

Government workers from the Bataan Economic Zone and the municipality of Mariveles focused on cleaning the seashore.

Balanga City Mayor Jose Enrique Garcia III joined city hall employees and barangay folks in cleaning the coastal areas where a big celebration of the forthcoming Philippine Bird Festival will be held from October 8 – 10. They started as early as 6:00 a.m. parading first from the city hall to “show people of the need to protect our environment.”

Gov. Enrique Garcia said Bataan has been an active participant in the International Clean-up program for many years.
