The militant Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Gitnang Luson and its allied organizations strongly denounced the approval of House Resolution 1109 which calls for the convening of lawmakers into a constituent assembly to amend the constitution even without the concurrence of the Senate and vowed to join nationwide protest actions to thwart it.
Bayan-GL Chair Roman Polintan said “the railroading of the House resolution betrays utter desperation on the part of President Arroyo and her cohorts in the House of Representatives to ram through a shift to parliamentary system to allow her to remain in power beyond 2010.”
“House Resolution 1109 is not only unconstitutional. It is also anti-democratic and self-serving,” Polintan added. “It is meant to legitimize dictatorship of the corrupt and illegitimate Arroyo regime and provide a shield for her from possible strings of charges that may be filed against her when she eventually steps down.”
Polintan called on the people of Central Luzon to let their voices be heard and join protest actions against this move.
Various organizations led by Bayan its allied organizations, including progressive partylists and other political opposition groups vowed to organize and carry out widespread protest actions to oppose and defeat charter change at “Con-ass.” Noise barrage will also be staged starting today.
Polintan also said those congressmen who voted in favor of House Resolution 1109 would earn their place in the “halls of shame for this brazen act”.
“They will have to face the people’s wrath come 2010 elections,” he warned.
Among the congressmen from Central Luzon who voted for the House bill were presidential son Juan Miguel Arroyo, Anna York Bondoc, Aurelio Gonzales and Carmelo Lazatin of Pampanga; Reylina Nicolas, Pedro Pancho, Lorna Silverio, Ma. Victoria Sy-Alvarado of Bulacan; Arturo Robes of the lone district of San Jose del Monte also in Bulacan; Monica Louise Teodoro, Jeci Lapus and Jose Yap of Tarlac; Rodolfo Antonino and Joseph Gilbert Violago of Nueva Ecija; Herminia Roman and Albert Garcia of Bataan; and Ma. Milagros Magsaysay of Zambales.
Polintan identified the signers from Pangasinan as Reps. Aguedo Agbayani, Ma. Rachel Arenas, Arthur Celeste, Mark Cojuangco, Conrado Estrella III and Abono partylist representative Robert Raymund Estrella.
“Some say their votes were dictated not by their conscience but by their pockets, and we believe it,” said Polintan, alluding to reports that pork barrel were dangled by Malacanang to ensure passage of the controversial House resolution.
