CLARK FREEPORT— A manufacturer of world-class wigs resembling real human hair has joined the ranks of three producers of electronics, a manufacturer of tires, and a maker of designer apparel as the top “overall performance” awardees of the state-owned Clark Development Corp. (CDC) for this year’s annual Clark Freeport Recognition Awards.
CDC president Benigno Ricafort announced yesterday that apart from the six investors here, five others will also get this year’s awards in specific categories, for a total of 11 awardees for this year.
He said the awards which were launched last year, recognize Clark investors’ “valuable economic and social development contributions, as well as their notable business and people management practices and successes” in this freeport.
Ricafort said the 11 awardees “performed well despite the effects of the world-wide economic slowdown in 2009 and thus helped shield this freeport from the economic crunch.”
The six “overall performance awardees were identified as electronic firms SMK Electronics, L and K Industries, and Nanox , tire producer Yokohama Tires, apparel manufacturer L&T International, and wig maker Aderans.
CDC has yet to announce the date for the awarding ceremonies, but noted that Pres. Arroyo would be invited to hand out the awards.
The awardees are to receive a trophy designed and hand-crafted by Kapampangan artist and Star columnist Claude Tayag.
“The trophy is made of recycled wood materials, reflecting Clark’s giving value to nature and the environment. It is highlighted by a globe and an arc representing the global reach and competitiveness of the Clark Freeport,” said the final draft of a CDC brochure to be distributed during the awarding ceremonies.
The awardee for “outstanding employment performance and human relations management” of personnel numbering 500 or more was NCO Philippines Clark, Inc. The awardee in the management of personnel numbering 500 less is Sumidenso Automotive Technologies-A (SAT-A).
Poongsan Microtec Philippines is also awardee for “outstanding environment and health management” and Comclark Technologies for “outstanding investment performance.”
Ricafort said that the Australia International Training and Management Group (AITMG) will be awarded as “outstanding new investor.”
Wig maker Aderans Philippines, Inc. makes “custom made wigs and other related products and is one of the global leaders in the manufacture of synthetic fiber wigs that look and feel like real human hair,” the CDC said.
Aderans has invested some P131 million in its facility here and manufactures about 5,000 wigs per month.
“In addition to the organic manpower of 314, Aderans provides employment opportunities in 19 locations in Central Luzon where it has sub-contractors,” the CDC added.
Meanwhile, this year’s most outstanding new investor AITMG is establishing here a $6-million educational facility that will offer vocational courses in the fields of hotel and restaurant management, plumbing, refrigeration and air-conditioning, electrical, auto-mechanical and construction, said the CDC.
The CDC said that the Australian firm was cited “for realizing its minimum investment commitment of P200-million ahead of its schedule.” The educational facility will be located at the mothballed Expo Pilipino theme park.
Nanox has exported electronic products worth about $409 million, while SMK Electronics’s exports was pegged at $40.5 million and L and K Industries’ exports were pegged at $20.3 million.
Yokohama Tires invested about P12 billion in establishing its manufacturing plant here and, in 2009 alone, exported tires worth $182.5 million. It produces 21,000 tires per day.
No figures on its exports were immediately available, but overall performance awardee L&T International is noted to be also the recipient of the Department of Trade and Industry’s Golden Shell Manufacturing Excellence Award. It manufactures high-end apparel for brands like Ralph Lauren, Nautica, Levi’s and Dillard’s.
