Castillejos releases P2-M for scholarships

    CASTILLEJOS, Zambals —  To equip the young citizenry of this municipality for future employment, the  municipal government here has allocated the amount of P2-million for educational assistance to some 200 poor but deserving students for school year 2011-2012.

    Castillejos Mayor Jose Angelo Dominguez said this program has targeted out-of-school youths and poor but deserving students to take college courses or skills trainings at Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) schools in the province or Olongapo City.

    Former vice mayor now Planning and Development Officer Enrique Eclarin said his office was tasked to interview, conduct qualifying examination, selection and monitor the grades of the municipal scholars.

    Each scholar will receive financial assistance in the amount of P5,000 per semester while those who will enrol in TESDA courses will receive free trainings.

    The students must maintain a certain grade for them to qualify in the scholarship program. They can also choose a four or five-year course in any school in Olongapo City or Zambales, Eclarin said.

    “Based on a consultation with the mayor, we have requested the sangguniang bayan to make a resolution to increase the scholarship fund yearly by P1 million until the budget reaches the maximum funding of P5 million per year,” Eclarin said.

    By school year 2012-2013, the municipal government will allot P3 million for the scholarship program.

    “We will conduct a qualifying examination on April 14-15, and whoever will pass the qualifying examination will be scheduled for interview on April 25.  And then we will announce the scholars of this municipality in time for the enrolment for this coming semester”, Eclarin added.

    Among the courses offered were automotive servicing, shielded metal arc welding, electrical installation and maintenance, commercial cooking, computer programming and computer hardware services.

    Registration for TESDA courses started on April 11, while training for the first batch of out-of- school youths starts April 25, 2011.

    According to a survey, the TESDA courses selected by the municipality were among the most needed skills by companies located in Subic Bay Freeport Zone specially Hanjin Heavy Industries Corporation, a shipbuilding firm located at Redondo Peninsula,  and locators engaged in tourism related industries.
