TALAVERA, Nueva Ecija – Village officials here were urged on Saturday to revive
the Green Revolution or massive vegetable gardening scheme in line with the
food security program of Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.

Interior and Local Government Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs
Felicito Valmocina said no vacant lot in the country’s 42,000 barangays should be
left unproductive to various vegetables, and roadsides planted to fruit-bearing
trees.

“Yung number one na gusto ng ating pangulo, yung food security ay makatutulong
ang 42,000 barangay,” Valmocina said, noting that he has practiced planting for
28 years in his own village of Holy Spirit in Quezon City.

“Nakalagay sa paso, sa lata, sa kawayan, sa sako, lahat ng recycled materials ay
natataniman namin ng gulay,” he said. Through urban gardening they kept the
village rich in flowers and vegetables.

Valmocina represented DILG Sec. Benhur Abalos in a victory party of the Solid
BBM for President Worldwide Movement, Inc. (SBPWM) from Central and
Northern Luzon held in this municipality. With Valmocina was Asec. Elizabeth
Lopez de Leon.

Incidentally, this first-class Nueva Ecija municipality has been proclaimed by the
sangguniang panlalawigan as the province’s “Gulayan Capital” for successfully
implementing vegetable gardening in all of its 53 villages and schools.

“Lahat ng barangay hall na mayroong space ay dapat taniman ng gulay. Hangga’t
maaari, lahat ng mga constituents nila ay mapagtanim ng gulay o kaya ay sila na
ang magtanim doon sa mga tamad, walang interest, gawing programa na ng
barangay,” Valmocina said.

This program, while being a big step towards the realization of the
administration’s drive for food sufficiency, would not cost the barangay units
much, he stressed.

“Gawin na nila yung green revolution,” the official said.
