CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Mabalacat town, which is poised to be a component city, paraded its players wearing sandals at the opening of the 1st Gov. Lilia G. Pineda Cup Pampanga SK inter-town basketball tournament here on Sunday.
The Mabalacat cagers said they paraded wearing sandals to protest what they described as lack of support from the local officials led by Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales.
“We almost didn’t make it on time for the parade. The transportation never came. It was Board Member [Cris] Garbo who saved the day by providing a ride,” said a player.
He disclosed that he felt humiliated after seeing players from Lubao and Apalit towns having complete uniforms and shoes provided by their respective Local Government Units (LGUs).
At least two of the Mabalacat players, including Jerwin Lazatin of Xevera Subdivision, paraded without uniforms as they were not done yet.
The funds for the uniforms were not released immediately, it was learned.
BOKING:
ASK THEM
In a text message sent to Punto, Morales said: “The organizers are BM Garbo and Kagawad Carlo Dizon. Ask them.”
“The players’ allowance for their practice was asked by Garbo from the municipal government. The shoes will be provided by Garbo, and Dizon was the manager. They have no request for shoes,” Morales said.
In his speech during the flag-raising rites on Monday, Morales said he will give Dizon 24 hours to explain why the players were neglected. He stressed that Dizon “was responsible for the players’ welfare.”
DIZON: WHERE’S THE MONEY?
“I was blamed for the wearing of sandals during the opening. I have not instructed players to do that and I even came late, arriving when the parade was finished,” said Mabiga Councilor Carlo Dizon, team manager of Mabalacat.
But Dizon expressed disappointment over the lack of support from Morales and her daughter, Mabalacat SK President Ira Morales.
Dizon disclosed that he was approached by Ira before the opening and was told that they should have “enjoyed two set of uniforms, one pair of shoes each, KFC meal after practice and P500 per player allowance after every practice.”
Dizon said “only one of them was given and that was P150 per player after practice.” He said Procurement Officer June Magbalot “personally gave the money to the players and not him.”
Dizon said the Mabalacat team won against Sasmuan on Monday, 72-68, despite the “problem.”
He said he had rented transportation to ferry the players last Sunday during the opening and last Monday.
“No transportation ever came despite being promised by the Mabalacat LGU,” said Dizon.
He said he had shouldered the expenses after every practice and to get the birth certificates of the players.
“It’s okey with me to spend but we need the support of the local government. I also wonder where did the funds for the players go, if there was any,” Dizon said.
Garbo, for his part, said the provincial government gave a subsidy of P30,000 per team.
“I believe it was just a subsidy and the LGU should provide the other needs,” he said.
In a text message, Ira said “please ask Garbo, Dizon and SK Pampanga Federation President Krizzanel Garbo,” son of the Board Member Garbo.
Krizzanel also begged off for her comments.
