BulSU paper tops CL campus journalism

    MALOLOS CITY—Pacesetter, the official student publication of the Bulacan State University (BulSU) here regained the over-all championship in the Central Luzon journalism contest after losing to Bataan-based student publication four years ago.

    The annual contest is marked with many first including the introduction of lay-outing contest, and participation
    of 302 campus journalists from 30 different colleges and universities in the region. It was held at the Villa Alfredo Resort in San Fernando City in Pampanga from 15 to 17.

    “We worked hard for this,” said Dr. Romulo Mercado, the director for student publication at the BulSU. He said that they first lost  in 2011 to Bataan Peninsula State University’s The Guilds which held the over-all championship until last year.Third place over-all is the Industrialist, the official publication of the Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University (DHVTSU),followed by Regina of the University of Assumption in San
    Fernando, Pampanga; and by the Defender, the official publication of the BPSU-Balanga City Campus.

    Rounding up the top 10 are Genre of the Wesleyan University (WU) in sixth place, Sinukuan Gazette of the Pampanga Agricultural College (PAC) at seventh, The Bastion of the Ramon Magsaysay Technological State University (RMTU); the Work of the Tarlac State University (TSU), and the Pioneer of the Angeles University Foundation (AUF).

    Held every year, the contest has two major categories— group and individual. In the group category, Pacesetter bagged the best newsletter and best tabloid awards, while The Guilds topped in magazine, and broadsheet.

    The University of the Assumption topped in folio sub-category. In the individual sub-categories, Pacesetter staffers romped with a number of awards both in English and Filipino, with Jasmine Lorraine Tan, the editor in chief, taking three golds when she topped the sports writing, column writing and developmental communication writing in English.

    She was adjudged as the winningest campus journalists in the annual contest. Other staffers of the Pacesetter also bested the competition as they ruled newswriting and sports writing in Filipino and literary graphics sub
    categories.

    Other staffers either placed second down to fifth place in the annual competition. Top five winners in all subcategories will go to the Luzon- wide press conference to be held in Lucban, Quezon next month.

    The 13th Regional Higher Education Press Conference is hosted by the Pampanga Agricultural College (PAC)
    and organized by the Association of Tertiary School Paper Advisers Region-III.
