MALOLOS CITY – Bulacan province has been declared under a state of calamity after widespread floods hit most of its 24 towns and cities, Gov. Daniel Fernando said on Tuesday.
The declaration of the state of calamity came about on Sunday evening in a special session via zoom application of the sangguniang panlalawigan presided by Vice Gov. Alexis Castro.
Like the other provinces in Central Luzon, Bulacan has been, since last week, experiencing heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon enhanced by successive typhoons Egay and Falcon.
Fernando said a total of 228,648 families from 171 barangays have been affected by the massive floods, citing reports from the provincial disaster risk-reduction and management office. He added that 21,367 individuals or 5,631 families were forced to flee their homes due to the flooding.
Initial assessment put damage to infrastructure at P500 million, the cost of agricultural damage at P93.023 million, and P7.677 million in loss of livelihood.
The state of calamity declaration is expected to trigger the release of calamity funds.
