MABALACAT, Pampanga – The Department of Health (DOH) has lauded officials here for the creation of a birthing station at a thickly-populated area, saying it will “cut the number of maternal and infant deaths in Central Luzon.”

In the soft launching of the birthing station at the Madapdap Resettlement Center (MRC) yesterday, DOH regional official Dr. Edna Abcede said “the creation of the Mayor Miguel Morales M.D. Memorial Birthing Station largely depended on the efforts of the Mabalacat local government unit.”

Abcede disclosed that about 37 women out of 100,000 died while giving birth in the region last year, with five coming from Pampanga.

She added that five infants out of about 1,000 died in the same region last year.

Abcede, who represented DOH regional director Dr. Rio Magpantay, underscored the importance of birthing stations. “Pregnant wives should be brought to birthing station for their delivery, and not at homes.”

“If something happened or went wrong, it’s easier to deal with it at a birthing station,” said Abcede.

Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales and First District Rep. Carmelo “Tarzan” Lazatin led the launching of the facility named after the grandfather of Morales, the first mayor of the town.

Morales, in his speech, said “the birthing station will further boost the health care service of the town.” He added that “Madapdap is far and needs such facility.”

Morales also inaugurated at three new day care classrooms near the birthing station.

Lazatin, for his part, vowed to “help Morales’ project.” He donated ten hospital beds to the facility.

Dr. Rey Hipolito, medical officer of this town, said the facility would “charge a minimal fee for medicines but the service is absolutely free.”

“One spends about P3,000 for giving birth. But here you need only about P750,” said Hipolito.

The United States Agency International Development (USAID) helped Morales put up the birthing station at MRC where there are about 35,000 residents. The agency was represented by Dr. Ofelia Alcantara and Ethelyn Nieto, both officers of the Project for Self Mobilization for Health (PRISM).

Among those who graced the event were Vice Mayor Pros Lagman and Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, son of the solon, and Dapdap Village Chief Javier Taruc.
