BFAR trains Zambales fisherfolk in fish smoking to boost livelihood

IBA, Zambales (PIA) — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) conducted a post-harvest training session at Calapandayan in Subic, Zambales, to help local fisherfolk improve the quality and value of their catch.

During the event, 18 members of the Hook and Line Fishermen’s Association learned fish-smoking techniques using Galunggong (Mackerel Scad).

BFAR Regional Director Wilfredo Cruz emphasized that this initiative is part of the bureau’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable fisheries.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources trains 18 members of the Hook and Line Fishermen’s Association in Calapandayan, Subic, Zambales, on post-harvest techniques to help local fisherfolk improve the quality and value of their catch. (BFAR)

He added that by equipping local fisherfolk with essential skills, the bureau aims to help them produce high-quality products that meet market demands.

The session focused on post-harvest practices, particularly pagtitinapa (smoking), which extends shelf life, improves marketability, and increases the value of fish products.

Trainers demonstrated various methods of handling, preserving, and processing Galunggong, ensuring that participants gained practical knowledge to enhance their post-harvest practices.
