TARLAC CITY (PIA) — A total of 62 bright-colored and imaginative depictions of the nativity scene were featured in this year’s Belenismo sa Tarlac.

Now on its 17th year, the annual belen-making competition showcases the tradition, talent and artistry of Tarlaqueños through their own interpretation of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Tarlac Heritage Foundation Co-founder Isa Cojuangco Suntay said the festival highlights the cultural and religious significance of belens as the emblem of Christmas.

She added that the depictions of the nativity scene aim to illuminate the spirit of Christmas, and to spread hope to everyone, especially to those who were affected by the recent tropical disturbance.

Municipal Tourism Officer and belen designer JM Modomo explains that this year’s belen of San Clemente is titled ‘The Greatest Gift of All Time’. “Remembering the birth of Jesus Christ– that is the true essence of Tarlac. This is also to give hope to our kababayans who were affected by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine,” Suntay stressed.

Of the 62 entries, there are 17 in the Community category; 13 in the Church category; 14 in the Monumental category; six in the Grand Non-municipal category; and 12 in the Grand Municipal category.

On another note, the municipality of San Clemente aspires to emerge this year as a two-time Hall of Famer and 10-time first placer under the Grand Municipal category.

San Clemente Tourism Officer and belen designer JM Modomo explained that the town’s basket offering-inspired belen is made of plastic bottles, rattan, and paper blocks with residual waste.

“The title of our belen is ‘The Greatest Offering of All Time’. The concept was drawn from the offering basket in the altar of the church. It is also inspired by the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ which is the biggest and greatest offering for mankind,” he noted.

Modomo also encouraged the public to visit the belens located in various parts of the province.

Accredited by the Department of Tourism, the Belenismo sa Tarlac is a member of the Federation Española de Belenistas. (CLJD/TJBM, PIA Region 3- Tarlac)
