BALANGA CITY — Bataeño youth dealing with mental health issues such as depression and suicidal thoughts are urged to seek professional help.

In a Seminar on Self-Enhancement Focusing on Mental Health Awareness, Healthy Lifestyle and Personality Development, Mariveles Mental Wellness and General Hospital Health Education and Promotion Officer Jojie Maglaqui cited a study of World Health Organization revealing 17 percent of youth aged 13-15 years old have attempted suicide at least once from January to March 2019.

“Suicide has been a trend among the youth these past few years including here in our province wherein I experienced more and more students attempting to take their lives,” he shared.

Maglaqui reminded the youth-attendees to always look for warning signs of a person who might have suicidal tendencies to prevent the act.

“Someone who may be suicidal is talking about wanting to hurt or kill someone else, always talking about death and describing himself as burden to others,” he explained.

“Preparing to leave such as writing goodbye letters and asking others to take on responsibility for the care of people or even their pets are also some of the early signs you should know about,” Maglaqui furthered.

He reminded the youth facing mental health issues that professional help is available via hotline numbers (047) 935-4138 and (047) 633-9006.

They can also visit Mariveles Mental Wellness and General Hospital, formerly Mariveles Mental Hospital, for mental health care in its Out-Patient Unit open every Mondays to Saturdays from 8:00AM to 5:00PM.

About 190 students from Bataan Peninsula State University and members of the out-of-school youth organization Pag-asa Youth Association of the Philippines Bataan Chapter participated in the activity held Friday in Balanga City.

Organized by the Bataan Provincial Youth Council and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, the activity aims to raise awareness on mental health and combat the increasing number of suicide cases in the province. -PIA 3
