BALANGA CITY, Bataan – More than 3,000 people on Saturday witnessed the nationwide launching of Philhealth Registration Day here at the Bataan People’s Center in Balanga City.

Provincial officials led by Bataan Gov. Enrique Garcia and officials from Philhealth and the Department of Health distributed an initial 1,456 Philhealth cards to indigents screened by the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The beneficiaries came from barangays in 11 towns and one city in the province. Garcia said DSWD is doing continuous processing and more cards are to be handed out free.

The launching in Bataan was part of the nationwide program of Pres. Benigno Aquino III to extend free Philhealth coverage to the poor in the country. Under this program, DOH funds the payment of the premiums.

Start of coverage is from September 30, 2010 to September 30 next year.

Those who can afford were encouraged to apply for coverage. Many filled-up Philhealth forms right at the launching site and paid P300 as quarterly payment of the premium.

Posters of encouragement read “Kung kaya mong magka-cellphone, mas kaya mo ang Philhealth contribution” bilang bagong kasabihan ng kalusugan.

The provincial government for its part has so far funded Philhealth premiums for more than 60,000 indigents in Bataan with one year coverage.
