MARIVELES, Bataan – The coal-fired GN Power Plant here on Wednesday announced that its two units of 300 megawatts each were “under shutdown.”

Roberto Racelis, Jr., chief of community relations office, said Unit 1 of the power plant was under maintenance shutdown while Unit 2 was placed under emergency shutdown following the discovery of leaks in its boiler.

He said that before the emergency stoppage Tuesday at dawn, the plant was operating with 316 mgw.

With the temporary stoppage of both Units 1 and 2, the GN Power Mariveles Energy Center has no more available power supply for its customers.

Racelis said that Unit 1 is expected to return to operation on Aug. 19, 2021 while Unit 2 on June 8, 2021.

He said that their operators noticed an unusual sound in the boiler area of Unit 2 and upon inspection found several leaks that caused the declaration of emergency shutdown at 4 a.m. of Tuesday.

Racelis set aside the age factor for the bog down, saying the plant is still young having started operating in 2014.

“Hanggang June 8 pa ang estimated na itatagal ng repair sa nakitang sira sa Unit 2 bagama’t inaalam pa  dahil ang nakita ay ang area pa lamang na naa-access pa ngayon kasi ang planta kapag nag-shutdown ay mainit pa so it takes several days para lumamig upang mapasok ang loob nito na pwedeng naapektuhan,” Racelis said.

He said that Aboitiz, Ayala and  power partners own the power plant.
