BALANGA CITY – After the initial launch by Pres. Gloria Arroyo herself of the use of bamboo school desks in Lubao, Pampanga last October 5, the second introduction was held in Bataan Monday.

The Department of Trade and Industry provincial office led in the turn-over of 25 newly crafted bamboo school desks to eager Grade I, section 1 pupils of the Balanga Elementary School. The school became the first recipient of the bamboo desks in Bataan  and the second in Central Luzon and the country.

“Makinis at malamig,” school children exclaimed as they touched the bamboo school desks.

Balanga City Mayor Jose Enrique Garcia III, acting City Schools Supt. Jessie Ferrer and other school officials with the staff of DTI and other agencies of government witnessed the turn-over.

Yay Lasam, DTI provincial director, explained that it was the second activity in the country, the first at the J. Paule Elementary School in Lubao, Pampanga where the President led in the awarding of  the bamboo school desks.

She said that DTI wanted to promote the bamboo industry which the agency considers as environment-friendly that will help in climate-change mitigation.

DTI initiated the implementation of the Engineered Bamboo Project which was endorsed by Mrs. Arroyo to help cultivate and produce bamboo enough to supply about 25% of the P10 billion-desk requirements of the Department of Education, Lasam said.
