CLARK FREEPORT — Sunrise Events Inc. has announced its rescheduled IRONMAN Triathlon events during its casual press briefing at the recently concluded 4th Philippine Sports Tourism Awards at Clark Marriott Hotel.

According to Sunrise Events Inc. general manager Princess Galura, various sports events around the world were halted and rescheduled due to the Covid-19 pandemic as they need to adapt into the current situation for mass participation in sports.

“For sporting events, the regional task force already allowed us to proceed as they see fit. So we presented to them the protocols of IRONMAN since we are already back in the race in Taiwan, Japan, Australia, etc. We even had a full distance triathlon in Florida already,” said Galura.

The IRONMAN Philippines will hold its 5150 Triathlon in Davao del Norte on February 21, the Alveo IRONMAN 70.3 in Davao City on March 22, and a full distance IRONMAN in Subic on June 7.

“Next year our first quarter has two races, an SBR olympic distance in Davao del Norte in February and 70.3 SBR in Davao City by March,” said Galura.

“The next race is in Subic in June which is a full distance SBR. We were already granted by the regional task force here in Region 3 the right to open the registration, so we did that last November 20,” she added.

According to Galura, the IRONMAN Group formed its interim guidelines and measures as “five pillars of racing under covid situation” in the context of Covid-19 to continue the race for open air mass participation events in accordance with the World Health Organization.

The five pillars of interim guidelines are: Enhanced hygiene, education and screening, density reduction, athlete self-reliance, and touch point minimization.

“Under Covid, we have to adjust and make new plans. We have to make it parallel with WHO and make it applicable to mass participation,” said Galura.

Galura also said that under MGCQ, IRONMAN is only allowed to accommodate 50 percent registered participants as they have to put a ceiling on the number of participants for Davao and Subic also noting that the athletes need to rely on themselves as they are no longer allowed to have a mechanic.

Sunrise Events, Inc. won the Organizer of the Year (private) award at the 4th Philippine Sports Tourism Awards for its numerous events in 2019 such as IRONMAN 70.3, IRONKIDS, IRONGIRL, and Xterra.
