ANGELES CITY – “Nicole” has gone to the US last March after recanting her allegations of rape against US Marines Lance Corporal Daniel Smith.

While she has closed that chapter to be able to move on with her life, Smith’s colleagues appeared not ready to give her peace.

A Navy corpsman, for one, has been passing around an email, claiming that Nicole “worked” as a guest relations officer at the Neptune Club in Subic Bay Freeport where she met Smith on the night of Nov. 1, 2005 incident.

His claims in the letter, posted on a website that is popular among US expats here, ran counter to everything that Nicole stated in her Nov. 3, 2005 affidavit, a review by this correspondent showed.

Nicole is a college graduate in a prestigious university in Zamboanga City and was managing a restaurant near a military camp before she and her three siblings went on a vacation in Subic at the invitation of a friend in the US military, Chris Mills.

Claiming he was part of the Operation Enduring Freedom, the war games that Smith participated in by that time, he said Nicole “worked at the Neptune Club, not as patron of the bar ( She is what you call a GRO).”

“Trust me when I say this, it’s a bar just like Angles (sic) city has. Locals do not go there, the placeis (sic) for foreigners” said the man in a letter posted in harrythehorse.com.

The corpsman blamed the Philippine media, saying reporters “just happen to keep that part under cover but it is a fact.”

According to him, the boyfriend of Nicole, who he identified as Lance Cp. Brian Goodrich, knew her already before the incident took place.

“Were (sic) do you think he meet (sic) her in the first place guys?? How is the media going to have the poster child of rape being a bargirl. Easy they just hide the facts,” he said.

He claimed that Nicole also lied when she claimed that Mills, said to be a Navy corpsman, was the one who invited her to the club.

“Mills… did not such thing. You can’t be invited to your job. That’s just stupid,” he said.

“Even in her recant she slides around this major fact never admitting to it. The press can’t say anything about it, too much tourism at risk,” the letter-writer added.

According to him, Goodrich was not in Subic because he was posted in Clark where the troops were banned from drinking alcohol, taking local nationals in their rooms or straying out of Clark.

“He was in Clark with his unit staying at the Fontana resort villas. I stayed at the Holiday Inn for over 6 months during my deployment. Did sickcall for these guys so I’m very familiar with the timeline,” the Navy man related.

“The simple fact to the whole point is she was a (GRO) at a bar and was as they call it barfined. To save face and not let the rest of world know how prostitution can be illegal but legal at the same time show the system as a whole is corrupt. I’m not the average Joe and had boots on ground at the time,” he said.
