ANGELES CITY – Donell Atienza of Holy Angel University (HAU) won the Men’s Open finals of the 1st Edgardo D. Pamintuan Invitational Table Tennis Tournament on April 10, finishing a 4-1 lead against his former teammate.

Atienza dominated the game against Jonas Cortez of System’s Plus College Foundation with his powerful forehand topspin and defense.

“My friend Jonas played well, pero nakita ko lang siguro agad yung kahinaan niya kaya na-control ko yung laro hanggang sa fifth set,” he said.

Some 86 table tennis players from different schools, barangays, towns and sports clubs joined the event. Government and non-government workers also joined the tournament held at the Event Center of SM City Clark.

Atienza defeated University of the Assumption (UA-Pampanga) coach Rey Reg before reaching the finals while Cortez defeated his former teammate, Timothy Perez in the semi-finals.

In the Boy’s Open category, Mhelkhie Gautane of barangay Virgen Delos Remedios this city used his powerful forehand attack to win the championship against Faizal Manmod. Carl Aguilar, a first year high school student of HAU, placed third.

In the Women’s Open, Angelica Casem of Bamban, Tarlac bagged the championship against Maricris Ayson, also of HAU. Carmina Sengson of UA-Pampanga defeated Chinie Angeles to bag the third place.

“Una sa lahat, nagpapasalamat kami kay Atty. Ed Pamintuan sa kanyang walang kupas na pagsuporta sa mga atleta,” said a group of Angeles players.

“We are hoping that more tournaments will be organized here. Players like us excel and prepare if we know that there are competitions,” they added.

They also urged Angeleños to vote for competent leaders especially those who “have the heart for athletes at hindi yung pinagkakakitaan lang kami.”
