CITY OF SAN FERANDO – “It made us people in Apalit very proud.”

Thus said Mayor Oscar “Jun” Tetangco yesterday as this year’s top graduate of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) in Baguio City is from Barangay San Juan, Apalit.

Tetangco said Angelo Edward Parras belongs to a “silent family” who lives in front of the municipal hall.

“I know them, especially their grandmother,” said Tetangco, identifying Parras’s grandmother as “Apung Su.”

The two-term mayor said he had formed a group to coordinate with Parras family for the “grand welcome” for the 21-year-old PMA graduate who received the Presidential Saber from President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino on Monday.

“We will give an honor due to a top PMA graduate,” said Tetangco. He disclosed that they had “tentatively” set the welcome program for Parras on March 8, five days before the graduate turns 22 years old.

Tetangco said Parras is still in Baguio City that’s why they could not finalize the date next week.

In a phone interview, Gov. Lilia “Nanay Baby” Pineda said Parras “made us Kapampangan proud and happy.” She added that the honor “boosted the confidence of the Apalit folk.”

Pineda said Tetangco should give due recognition to the achievement of Parras, who will join the Philippine Navy.

Tetangco, for his part, said they will invite Pineda in welcoming Parras.

According to reports, Parras is the son of a trader. Parras’s father, Apolinario is a business supervisor at the Gateway Business Park in Cavite.

He bested 195 others in the Laon-Alab class of 2011.

Parras decided to leave the University of the Philippines in Diliman where he was taking up Computer Science to become a cadet. He got the support of his father in making the decision to join the PMA.

Parras received 12 other academic awards including the Jusmag Award for the Navy.
