ANOTHER REPORTER of SunStar who was also a publisher of a community newspaper in Davao Del Norte was killed on June 7.
Dennis Denora, publisher of Trends and Times, was gunned down at around 2 pm by still unidentifi ed assailants near the wet market of Panabo City.
This was the report of the Davao Chapter of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) shortly after the gory incident.
Denora is the 11th journalist killed under the administration of President Duterte and 161st since 1986.
We recognize the governments effort by creating a task force to investigate and put a stop to the media murders. But we believe that what is needed is a quick response team that can immediately mobilize to places where the killings were committed.
The quick response team should be composed of a special police unit as well as members of the media who are trained on what to do in such incidents.
This is not to dampen the efforts of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security headed by Undersecretary Jose Joel Sy Egco of the Presidential Communications and Operations Office.
But, again, we feel it is not sufficient. One journalist killed is one too many.
Sadly, impunity exists to this day.
