ANGELES CITY – Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting has trimmed down to two city councilors her possible running mate in 2010 as she expressed her intention to run for mayor.
Cabigting disclosed that she will choose between her two political allies, Councilors Maricel Morales and Willie Rivera.
Describing them as “both very much qualified,” Cabigting said she will leave the final choice to their party.
Morales, niece of Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales of nearby Mabalacat, is a first-term councilor and beauty queen-turned-actress. Rivera is a two-term councilor and lawyer.
Morales said she would consider the welfare “of the people, especially the women and children,” in accepting the challenge to seek the second top post here.
Rivera, on the other hand, said he would “not run for vice mayor if Cabigting would be his opponent.”
Earlier reports said at least two possible mayoralty candidates, including former mayor and Subic Clark Alliance for Development Council (SCADC) Chairman Edgardo Pamintuan, had expressed their intention to take Cabigting as their vice mayor in 2010.
Cabigting said “there were attempts by some quarters to convince (her) to re-elect but for now I want to fulfill my dream to be the first woman mayor of Angeles City.”
Mayor Francis “Blueboy” Nepomuceno will take in Councilor Ricardo “Ric” Zalamea as his runningmate for next year’s elections, according to City Administrator Mark Allen Sison.
Asked if the mayor also considered three-term Councilor Ares Yabut as his runningmate, Sison said “it’s definitely Zalamea.”
