CLARK FREEPORT – The Korean community in nearby Angeles City is calling for the immediate extradition of their compatriot who was arrested in a posh hotel here by combined agents of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) and International Police (Interpol) in coordination with the local police Wednesday night.

The suspect was identified as Korean national Sang Tae Lee who is wanted in his country for various offenses.

But instead of being immediately extradited, Lee was brought to hospital here after sustaining “self-inflicted injuries,” according to a long-time Angeles-based Korean national who asked that he be identified only as “Kim” for fear of reprisal.

Kim alleged that Lee is a leader of the Korean mafia operating in the Philippines.

Kim also alleged that Lee is wanted in a string of criminal cases in Korea and has also earned the ire of other Koreans here.

Kim warned that Lee is very clever and could be trying to evade arrest by inflicting injuries on himself.

Angeles City police director Senior Supt. Eden Ugale confirmed that Lee was arrested by BI agents and that proper coordination was made with the local police prior to his arrest.
