ANGELES CITY – It may be a veritable asphalt jungle and concrete forest, but there are still pockets of agricultural productivity in this city. Their preservation a priority agenda of the current administration.

Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. at one time after another has shown his devotion to agricultural production to the extent of even joining farmers planting rice and taking initiatives in vegetable farming, even backyard gardening, especially in these pandemic times.

Lazatin has also ordered the availability of seeds and fertilizers – for free – at the city agriculture office.

Part and parcel of the relief package distribution to the 33 barangays are vegetable seeds for planting which once harvested make a nutritious supplement to the family diet.

The city government also launched “Luntian sa Barangay Lingap Project,” a sustainable project for food security amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last Monday, on behalf of the mayor, Executive Assistant V Raffy Angeles, together with city agriculture officer Erickson Dagdag turned over knapsack sprayers to nine farmers in the city, namely Antonio Candelario and Efren Agluba of Barangay Cuayan; Alfred Reyes and Domingo Masbang from Barangay Cutud; Cipriano Vigilio of Barangay Pulung Maragul; Bernardo Masiclat and Michael Villapana of Barangay Sapalibutad; and Fidel Carbungco and Samuel Carbungco of Barangay Sapangbato.

Little things, the knapsack sprayers may be, but they go a long way in contributing to the city’s efforts for food security, especially among the small farmers.
