SAN JOSE CITY, Nueva Ecija – The Nueva Ecija police mourn the death of a one-year-old boy who was accidentally hit by a bullet from the service firearm of his policeman father Thursday night.
Investigation showed the 33-year-old patrolman who came home from duty was alighting from his motorcycle when his service firearm, a .9mm pistol, “accidentally fell on the ground and went-off, hitting his 1-yr-old son, who was playing nearby.”
The boy was rushed to a local hospital but was declared dead upon arrival, police said.
The policeman, a member of the elite 2nd provincial mobile field company, submitted himself to the city police station. He is now facing charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide.
“We are saddened by this unfortunate event. We all know that no father would endure the pain of losing his child in such a tragic accident,” said Col. Richard Caballero, acting director of the Nueva Ecija Police Provincial Office.
He added, though, that ” we have to follow the rule of law to give justice to the victim, whoever is involved.”
Caballero said they will conduct more seminars and trainings especially on gun safety and responsible gun ownership for police officers to avoid similar incident.
