ANGELES CITY – Homegrown IT mogul Dennis Anthony Uy and his firm Converge ICT Solutions were cited Tuesday by the city council for “improving the nation’s economy, technological innovation and progress.”

In a session held via video conference, the sangguniang panlungsod adopted Resolution No. PR 1178-08-21, recognizing the efforts of Uy and Converge “in improving the Philippines’ strides to technological innovation, economic rebound and nation building”

The resolution was mainly sponsored by councilor Jesus “Jay” Sangil, chairman of the committees on public works and engineering, and Clark Freeport Zone. It was co-sponsored by councilors Alfie Bonifacio, Arvin Suller, Raco Del Rosario, Marino Bañola, Dan Lacson, Joseph Ponce, Jaycee Aguas, and ABC president Jerry Alejandrino. It was seconded by councilors Thelma Indiongco and SK president Mandani in a session presided by Vice Mayor Vicky Vega Cabigting.

Sangil said that it was Uy’s contributions that helped rally business and local leaders in Angeles City to rise from the  aftermath of calamities that hit Angeles City in the 1990s such as the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo and US bases closure.

“We all know the inspiring story of Dennis, his family and business where his humble beginnings as grocery store attendant, a technician, the video rental shop that became a cable tv company eventually. From a local entrepreneur, he is now a leading figure in fiber optics and internet provision in the whole country and probably in Asia Pacific region,” Sangil said.

The resolution states: “the initiatives, motivation and diversification from their start-up business had led to attainment of a vision for greatness which also redounds to greater benefit for Angeles City.”

The Council cited Uy as “a true dedicated son of Angeles City, is now also considered as one of the great minds of Asia, entrepreneur par excellence, a business genius, a stalwart of technological innovation who remain committed to Angeles City’s progress.”

Converge, which is now giving legacy internet providers like PLDT and Globe Telecoms a tough competition, has just reported its first half earnings for 2021 that include P3.252 billion net income, P11.78 billion in consolidated revenues where the majority of P10.2 billion come from residential.

Since being given congressional franchise in 2009, Converge has continued to expand with its fiber rollouts that cover 8.3 million homes in the entire Philippines, remaining on track to reach about 55 percent target in the next four years. Converge is now considered as a blue-chip company by the Philippine Stock Exchange, with its recent inclusion in the PSE Index in less than a year from being a publicly listed company.

The resolution stated : “Dennis Uy, the acknowledged leader and visionary has catapulted Converge into becoming one of the leading pure fiber company that now covers not just Luzon but also Visayas and Mindanao. “

“All these achievements give Angeles City pride, prestige and honor as Converge continues to strive for excellence,” it further stated.
