For the first time in the history of the Outstanding Fernandino Awards conferred last February 7, there is a recipient in the field of labor in the person of Tita Mercy Algallar.
Marcelina Maniago Algallar may have been born in Mexico, Pampanga but has devoted more than half her life to upholding the rights and welfare of her fellow workers in San Fernando and the rest of Central Luzon, making her this year’s Outstanding Fernandino in the field of Labor.
Tita Mercy has been the president of the Labor Union of the VL Makabali Memorial Hospital, Inc. for the past 20 years. Throughout these years, the institution has not had a union strike. Union members attest that this achievement is due to Tita Mercy’s sensitivity which enables her to balance the needs of the members and the hospital management.
Tita Mercy is well-loved by her colleagues at the hospital. More than half of the work force in Makabali actually signed her nomination to the prestigious award.
Last December she received the 1st Felix C. Makabali Award for Service Achievement, in cognizance of more than 30 years of service to the hospital.
Tita Mercy regularly consults union members to determine whether they are satisfied with the work environment, their salaries and benefits. Whenever the need arises she brings this to the management’s attention.
As a union leader, she is also treasurer of the Bukluran Da Reng Magobra Pampanga and auditor of the NLM Katipunan World Federation of Trade Unions. She was also the representative of the labor sector in the City of San Fernando Multi-Sectoral Governance Council.
In her 18 years of selfless dedication as union president, she fought for the rights of many, fulfilled dreams of hundreds, and never grew tired of battling against prejudice and injustice. True to her humble self, she considers everything temporary but the good deeds she has done to people are permanently etched in their minds and hearts.
Tita Mercy was also the president of the Ramar Village Pastoral Council and supported formation and liturgical activities of their parish with vigor and enthusiasm during her term. She is also a former president of the Ramar Village Homeowners Association where their family has been residing in the past 29 years.
As a person, tita Mercy remains steadfast and humble, with a helping hand to lend to peers and friends always. I am pretty sure that the TOFA will continue to inspire tita Mercy to reach even greater heights in her service to the people. Congratulations po!
It was quite unfortunate for me to have had my ATM card captured at Landbank Dolores Branch in San Fernando last Wednesday. But what made me more fortunate was the prompt response and assistance of the personnel at the bank in the retrieval of my ATM card, which in all took less than an hour compared to the one day waiting period in other similar instances. Many thanks to Landbank!
