BALANGA CITY (PIA) — The Department of Health (DOH) Central Luzon Center for Health Development (CLCHD) called on the public to individually prepare for disasters.

The call came amid a series of earthquakes that rocked parts of Metro Manila, southern Luzon and Mindanao.

The message was also issued in time for the observance of National Emergency Preparedness Day on December 6.

In a virtual conference, DOH CLCHD Medical Officer IV Maila Rostrata emphasized the need for everyone to take active steps in preparing for major disasters, particularly earthquakes.

She highlighted the significance of creating an emergency plan, emphasizing its importance even at the family level.

“Start by having something as simple as an emergency go-bag. When local government units instruct evacuation during disasters like earthquakes, typhoons, or flooding, this bag is all you need to carry due to the urgency of the situation,” she explained.

The recommended emergency disaster kit should include maps, personal documents, chargers or power banks, a radio, an emergency blanket, a Swiss army knife, medicine, first-aid items, a flashlight, extra batteries, and sufficient food and water.

In addition to individual preparedness, Rostrata urged the public to cooperate with local officials and adhere to evacuation procedures during disasters.

“We should not resist evacuation when necessary. Evacuation procedures vary, making coordination with our local government units crucial,” she underscored.

Furthermore, Rostrata encouraged individuals to become Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in Health (DRRMH) volunteers, participate in drills, and engage in disaster preparedness training. (MJSC/RPQ-PIA 3)
