CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga (PIA) — Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reopened the Lazatin Flyover in City of San Fernando, Pampanga, more than two months after it was closed for total rehabilitation.

The modular steel flyover is located at the intersection of Lazatin Avenue and Jose Abad Santos Avenue (formerly Gapan-San Fernando-Olongapo Road).

DPWH Senior Undersecretary Emil Sadain conducted final safety checking of the reconstructed structure before allowing light vehicle traffic movement.

He said light vehicles not exceeding 20 tons and 2.75 meters in vertical clearance are allowed to utilize it.

“Buses and trucks, and other heavy vehicles are prohibited to use the flyover in order to prolong the service life of the structure,” Sadain added.

An overhead gantry with solar lighting was installed on both approaches of the flyover to strictly implement the exclusive use of light vehicles.

“It is high time the law against overloading is strictly implemented as it prematurely deteriorates our roads and bridges including flyovers and put the safety of other motorists in jeopardy,” Sadain emphasized.

Lazatin Flyover is a two-lane, 7.5-meter wide and 195-linear meter long modular steel flyover that eases traffic congestion along Lazatin Avenue and Jose Abad Santos Avenue intersection thereby providing through traffic from the city of San Fernando in Pampanga to Bataan, Zambales, and vice versa.

It was closed to traffic last February 11, 2023.

The structure was dismantled for replacement of 45 pieces of prefabricated segmental slabs that had deteriorated due to passage of overloaded vehicles.

Extensive repair works were completed ahead of the May 31, 2023 schedule.

Composite girders with asphalt or prefabricated segmental slabs were utilized in order to rebuild the flyover faster. (CLJD-PIA 3)
