Globe deepens its commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in the Philippines by collaborating with the Mapúa University on technopreneurship training, upskilling, mentorship, and curriculum development. Together with the University, Globe’s IT Academy will be conducting Train-the-Trainers (T3) Certification to equip teachers in the delivery of Technopreneurship in the classroom.
Mapúa is the county’s premier engineering and technological school, with a tradition of excellence in engineering and sciences, architecture and design, information technology, business and management, media and communication studies, and social sciences education.
“Through this partnership with Globe, we can provide our educators with additional skills and knowledge that will allow them to create a learning environment that can make our students more globally competitive, especially in the area of STEM. We take pride in producing exemplary graduates, builders, innovative thinkers, creators, and pioneers,” said Reynaldo B. Vea, PhD., President and CEO of the Mapúa University.
Mapúa hand-picked teachers specializing in STEM courses at the college level to join the program. The University also assigned teachers’ trainers to complete the T3 Certification and eventually cascade the lessons to other schools.
“Globe aims to further empower and enable schools in enhancing the delivery of STEM Education aligned with the government’s focus on improved STEM performance. By training our teachers, we are building the foundation for their skills to improve so students can benefit and allow them to fully participate in the digital world,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.
The initiative is in line with Globe’s support for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 4 on quality education, and UN SDG No. 9, which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development.
The technopreneurship training consists of a 10-week learning session covering the development of entrepreneurial skills, attitudes, and mindsets of techies, scientists, and researchers within a business framework. Animo Labs, the technology business incubator of the De La Salle University, will be Globe’s training partner for the activity.
Animo Labs is the technology business incubator of DLSU (Manila), a special unit dedicated to help develop the commercialization of student/faculty/staff inventions, projects, theses, and research papers, through various interventions including start-up incubation and mentoring, workshops and competitions, and commissioned research.
“Animo Labs has nurtured the mission to promote and advance the practice of technology entrepreneurship for the longest time, ever since its founder started to teach it at the College of Computer Studies in 2006. But it is only with the support of Globe resources and advocacy that Animo Labs is able to spread this mission outside the walls of De La Salle University (Manila), to other DLSU schools and to Mapúa University,” said Frederico Gonzales, Executive Director, DLSU Animo Labs Technology Business Incubator.
By the end of the program, participants are expected to develop basic skills to take ideas from concepts to opportunities to prototypes and then into business ventures, taking into consideration the market’s problems, needs, ideas, and opportunities.
Beyond technopreneurship, Globe will engage Mapúa in student placement and upskilling initiatives through on-the-job training and internships, and participation in STEM-related learning engagements. It will also provide industry exposure to students and school faculty.
Both parties will also co-develop a curriculum for data science tracks/electives. Globe will assign industry experts within the company to serve as consultants and mentors, collaborate on consumer research, and create engagements around the use of big data technology for good.
“We continue to create a Globe of Good, not only for our employees, customers, and shareholders but also for the nation. Guided by this intent, we are forging partnerships with Mapúa and other schools and universities so we can create a Globe of Good in the education sector,” said Ato Jiao, Chief Human Resource Officer at Globe.
