There have been many controversies that have clung to the apparitions inFatima in 1917. One controversy is on whether the third secret of Fatima was fully revealed in 2000 during the papacy of John Paul II as asserted by the Vatican.

This secret, as revealed, revolved around the vision of a man in white being killed near a crucifix atop a hill, amid bodies of priests and bishops.

John Paul II believed he was the man in white, but that the Blessed Mother spared him from death after he was shot by Mehmet Ali Agca in 1981.

Now, however, more Catholics believe the late pope, now a saint, could not have been the man in white in the vision granted to Sister Lucia. Some claim the man is likely Pope Francis.

But back to the allegedly unrevealed part of the third secret. This suspicion was probably boosted by an article which came out in Neues Europa which claimed to have peeked into the Vatican’s archives and saw this part which allegedly dwelt on a huge chastisement that would befall mankind and leave most people dead.

This was denied by the Vatican. But what the Vatican has not denied are “added details” on the third secret as given to Sister Lucia.

Prolific Catholic writer Michael Brown has quoted Sister Lucia herself as having written:

“After the two parts which I have already explained, at the left of Our Lady and a little above, we saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand. Flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire…”

    Further, Sister Lucia said:

“The tip of the spear as a flame unlatches and touches the axis of the earth. It shudders.

Mountains, cities, towns, and villages with their inhabitants are buried. The sea, the rivers, and the clouds emerge from their limits, overflowing and bringing with them in a whirlwind houses and people in numbers that are not possible to count. It is the purification of the world as it plunges into sin. Hatred and ambition cause the destructive war!”

In the Church-approved apparitions in Kibeho in Rwanda in Africa, one visionary noted the Blessed Mother as having commented, “Where will you go when the fire is everywhere.”

    From water to fire?

Again, even details provided by Sister Lucia have not stopped further controversies.

Was the vision hinting on nuclear war, a comet hit, or geological abnormality that will cause the earth to shake, push gigantic tsunamis and, at another time, emit fire?

Again, we are reminded of the apparitions of the Blessed Mother in Akita, Japan, which was approved as worthy of belief by the local bishop. To Sister Sasagawa, the Blessed Mother warned as follows:

“As I told you, if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never have seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by My Son. Each day recite the prayers of the Rosary.

With the Rosary, pray for the Pope, the bishops and priests.

“The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres (other priests); churches and altars will be sacked; the Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.

“The demon will be especially implacable against souls consecrated to God. The thought of the loss of so many souls is the cause of my sadness. If sins increase in number and gravity, there will be no longer pardon for them.

“With courage, speak to your superior. He will know how to encourage each one of you to pray and to accomplish works of reparation.”
