CLARK FREEPORT – The police task group investigating the killing of the chief engineer of the Clark International Airport here said yesterday probers already have a “lead” on two or more suspects in his murder.

Tarlac police director Senior Supt. Alex Sintin, head of the task group, said he has ordered tight security for Crusenia Angeles, wife of slain engineer Ruel Angeles who was gunned down while he was driving with his wife and grandchild on board, in Barangay Pada-pada in Sta. Ignacia, Tarlac last Monday morning.

The wife survived but had to be hospitalized also for gunshot wounds. “We are providing her enough security and we are waiting for her health to improve before we ask her questions,” Sintin said. “We have information that the victim had a fight with somebody recently,” he said, but declined to give more details so as not to jeopardize the probe.

He said there could be more than two suspects, including the mastermind. Probers are also set to examine the contents of Angeles cellphone which has remained in the safekeeping of a relative, Sintin added. His task group came out the other day with a sketch of the face of the gunman, as described by witnesses.

The gunman, who used a .45 pistol, and his accomplice who drove their getaway motorcycle did not wear any mask.

Sintin said that members of his task group, which is also composed of probers from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, have been coordinating with more possible witnesses both at the victim’s town in Sta. Ignacia in Tarlac and at the Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC).

Angeles’ engineering department is in charge of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) which is set to be replaced by a new one in a bidding slated this month at the CIAC. The ILS normally costs P250 million. In November last year, the firm Evercon already won the bidding to supply the ILS, but the CIAC bids and awards committee declared last September a failure of bidding based on technical grounds.

Evercon filed a protest and paid a P1.2 million protest fee.
