BALANGA CITY — Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has commenced the construction of a new 7.6-kilometer road to barangay Quinawan in Bagac, Bataan.

This will provide faster access to major tourism destinations in the area.

DPWH Regional Director Roseller Tolentino said the Regional Construction Division is currently working on the first phase of the multi-year project which includes opening of the 1.585-kilometer of road section.

The project received an initial budget of P150 million under the FY 2021 General Appropriations Act.

“This new road to the coastal destinations of Bagac will start on the Bagac-Mariveles Road, and as of February 28, the project’s initial phase was reported to be 75 percent complete and there have been significant developments in the project area,” Tolentino disclosed.

The project involves earthworks including clearing and grubbing, removal of structures and other obstructions, excavation, embankment and subgrade preparation.

First phase likewise includes the construction of a 230-lineal meter stone masonry wall with a line canal on the side of the mountain that will serve as slope protection and drainage.

A metal guardrail beam shall also be placed on the side of the ravine for the safety of road users.

Meanwhile, Tolentino remarked that the required budget for the improvement of the remaining sections of the access road has already been requested.

“One way to stimulate tourism development in an area is to actually improve road connectivity. We recognize the great contribution of the tourism industry to the region’s economy and the DPWH is committed to ensuring that our local tourism destinations are easily accessible to all,” he furthered.

The agency previously completed several access roads leading to various tourist spots in Central Luzon namely Ditabuyan Falls in Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija; Monasterio de Tarlac in San Jose and Dueg Ecotourism Nature’s Park in San Clemente, Tarlac. (CLJD-PIA 3)
