BALANGA CITY – Former Senator Loren Legarda who is seeking a new term on Thursday favored the recommendation of Gov. Albert Garcia that the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) in Morong town be converted into a cloud computing facility.
The senatorial candidate said the suggestion of Governor Garcia on the cloud computing facility was good. She said that as principal author of Innovation Act passed before the pandemic, she believes that cloud computing, cloud storage and all of that is the way of today and the future.
Cloud computing is an application-based software infrastructure that stores data on remote servers which can be accessed through the internet.
“Luma na at hindi na nagamit ng matagal ang BNPP at mayroong mga safety measures and concerns. Ang isyu ng nuclear ay dapat pag-usapan pa dahil hindi naman tayo nangangailangan ng ibang source dahil mayroon tayong Renewable Energy Law,” Legarda said.
“Kung gagamit man siguro ng nuclear sa future, siguro ang bagong klase. But why look for other sources when we have the Renewable Energy Law,” she said.
Garcia said there are already many modern technologies that are safe which can be considered.
“Ang pakiusap ng liderato ng lalawigan ay sana i-consider naman ang newer, cleaner and more sustainable technology dahil 50 years ago pa itong BNPP.”
“Ang suggestion namin ay i-convert na lang sa isang cloud computing facility ang BNPP kung saan tayo ang magiging center for the information hub ng ating lalawigan at ng ating bansa. Perfect na perfect siya sa isang cloud computing facility dahil ang gusto ng mga server, ng mga data hub ay ang pinakasecure na structure and what can be more secure than the foundation of the dome of a nuclear power plant,” the governor added.
Legarda was in Bataan with the Uniteam led by presidentiable former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. where they were welcomed by thousands of supporters.
She was author of converting the Bataan Economic Zone, formerly the Bataan Export Processing Zone, into the Bataan special economic zone and freeport or for short the Freeport Area of Bataan.
“As a principal author of the economic zone and freeport in Bataan, ito ay may special na lugar sa aking puso kaya agree ako sa suhestiyon na to re-purpose the BNPP to a cloud computing facility,” Legarda said.
