DSWD bares P70K housing assistance to typhoon victims

    CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has announced the availability of P70,000 cash assistance to each family whose homes were totally or partially destroyed by the recent typhoons Pedring and Quiel in Central Luzon.

    This, even as the Department of Agriculture (DA) in the region also announced either 100 or 50 percent subsidy in rice seed procurement for farmers affected by the typhoons.

    The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in the region reported that typhoon Pedring totally destroyed 399 houses and partially damaged 12,053, while Quiel totally destroyed another 36 and partially damaged 106.

    The DSWD based here said that under its “the Core Shelter Assistance Project (CSAP), it will fund the building of typhoon-resistant, low-cost housing units for the affected families who would be asked to organize themselves into neighborhood associations to help build such shelters under the spirit of “bayanihan.”

    “This program is made available only to family victims whose houses were either totally or partially destroyed by either natural or man-made disasters to address the emergency and rehabilitation shelter needs to enable to restore their lives to normalcy,” the  DSWD said.

    It added that the “strong indigenous shelters” can withstand earthquakes up to intensity 4 on the Richter scale and 180 to 220 kph of wind velocity, which is the strength of a full-blown typhoon.

    Aside from the CSAP, DSWD is also offering under its Emergency Shelter Assistance P10,000 for those whose homes were totally wrecked and from P5,000 to P10,000 for those with partially damaged homes.

    In agriculture, the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Central Luzon is providing 100 percent subsidy for the procurement of hybrid and certified rice seeds for farmers whose crops were totally destroyed and 50 percent subsidy for those whose crops were only partially damaged.

    Meanwhile, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the region is distributing drugs and biologics for livestock and fingerlings for affected fishpond owners and fisherfolk.
