BAGAC, Bataan — A local reporter in his first try in the political arena filed Tuesday his certificate of candidacy seeking the mayoral post here as an independent candidate.
Cecilio “Butch” Gunio, 48, is provincial correspondent of Manila Standard and active in local broadcasting with 91.1 Sikat FM in Balanga City. He is an Ulat Sipag Journalism awardee of the Department of Science and Technology.
He is former chairman of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines–Bataan chapter and former president of the Bataan Chess Association.
He took up Bachelor of Science in Business Management at the University of the Philippines Extension Program in Pampanga.
“We position ourselves as alternative political group in Bagac. We will affiliate with a national party in the days to come,” Gunio said.
Gunio will face incumbent and reelectionist Mayor Ramil del Rosario, 52, who was undefeated during his three-term stint from 2007 to 2016.
After a one-term break leaving the mayorship to his son, Del Rosario came back in 2019 for his new first term.
Del Rosario with his complete slate, from vice-mayor to eight candidates for the sangguniang bayan, filed his COC last Oct. 1.
“Puno kami ng pag-asa na sama-sama tayo ng Team Ramil del Rosario sa pagbangon at patuloy na pagtaguyod ng maunlad na bayan ng Bagac. Ituloy natin ang nasimulan na,” the mayor said.
