CLARK FREEPORT – Celebrity Filipino-American singer Allan Pineda, better known as apl.de.ap of the world-famous Black Eyed Peas, showed up to the delight of his fans in a mall here last Thursday while buying watches and groceries for his family.

Punto sought an interview with him, but he politely declined, saying he was in the country only for the day. His American security guard, who towered at about 6 feet in height, also said Pineda did not want to be interviewed.

But Pineda obliged to posing for photos with his fans, with his burly security guard making sure that fans lined up for their turn.

Pineda first attracted attention when fans saw him at a watch store while he was buying several watches for members of his family staying at Barangay Sapang Bato, Angeles City, an area located immediately on the western perimeter of this freeport.

Apart from his security guard to whom he turned over a thick wad of cash for payment for the watches, he was accompanied by a younger half-sister and three other male relatives to whom he gave the watches.

He then proceeded to the SM City mall’s supermarket where his mother Cristina was shopping and waited for the cashier for the total bill on several boxes of groceries she bought but which the singer paid for. He again posed for photos with fans while waiting for the bill.

The last time Pineda was here was during the wake of his half brother Joven Pineda Deala who was shot dead by still unidentified suspects in Angeles City in February last year. He arrived on board a chartered private jet at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) here.

He did not comment when asked for reaction on the case of his half brother.

A call to the Clark International Airport and the DMIA revealed that Pineda did not charter any private jet this time. It was learned that there had been no record of any chartered plane landing in the recent days except for a Hong Kong Express flight which arrived while Pineda was shopping at the mall. He apparently took a commercial flight.

Pineda was born in 1974 in Barangay Sapang Bato where his mother Cristina Pineda, still lives with his siblings and half-siblings. His father was an African-American who later abandoned Cristina and their children.

Pineda then helped his mother raise his siblings by farming, while he also attended a local school. When he was 11 years old, the Pearl S. Buck Foundation, which looks after the welfare of Amerasian children in Pampanga, found an American named Jose Ban Hudgens to sponsor him in the US for the treatment of an eye defect. When he was 14, Hundgens decided to adopt him.

Since he became famous, he has been promoting the Philippines and Filipino culture. He also established the Apl Foundation to help local youths in Angeles in various ways.
