‘Fabian’ leaves P44-M damage to agriculture, fisheries

BALANGA CITY — The provincial disaster risk reduction and management office on Wednesday reported that Typhoon Fabian left more than P43.9 million in total damages to agriculture and fisheries in Bataan province.

PDRRMO chief Josefina Timoteo said damages in rice were at P31.5 million, corn – P0.76 million, high value crops – P1.2 million, and fisheries – P11.2 million.

Dinalupihan incurred estimated damage of P15.6 million, Hermosa – P15.4 million, Orani – P1 million, Samal – P2.6 million, Abucay – P1.9 million. Morong – P2 million, Balanga City – P810,000, Pilar – P2 million, Orion – P450,000, Limay – P170,000, Mariveles – P1.4 million, and Bagac – P510,000.

Flash floods hit some barangays with waters mostly from ankle- to knee-deep except Barangay Almacen in Hermosa where flood waters rose to four feet and Sitio Sunrise in San Juan, Samal with five to six feet deep.

Affected in Samal were 45 families of 85 persons who were evacuated to the local school. Also affected were 22 families of 98 individuals from Pilar and Balanga City who were pre-emptively evacuated.

The MacArthur Highway with some portions under one-foot deep waters and the Roman Highway, two major roads in Bataan, were all passable during the height of the storm.

Timoteo said all concerned disaster and rescue agencies were on standby and in close monitoring for any eventuality on the effect of the southwest monsoon enhanced by the typhoon that brought intermittent moderate to heavy rains in the province.

She said PDRRMO provided updates and in continuous monitoring and coordination with concerned member agencies.

Member agencies are the Metro Bataan Development Authority, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, provincial engineering office, Department of Public Works and Highways, provincial health office, provincial general services office, the Peninsula Electric Cooperative, Department of Education, and all local government units.
