CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Some P1.1 billion worth of damages in agriculture and infrastructure were wrought by storm Ondoy and typhoon Pepeng in Pampanga, the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) reported yesterday.

Data released by PDCC following its post-disaster assessment meeting with various government and private sector groups indicated that damages caused in agriculture were pegged at P900 million for Ondoy and an initial estimate of P3 million for Pepeng.

PDCC officer Emmy Villavicencio told Punto that in infrastructure, damages were estimated at about P123.2 million.

“The overall estimated damage in agriculture in Pampanga totaled P938,261,694, and this covers crops, livestock and fisheries,” she said.

Villavicencio also noted that at the height of the floods, 92,171 families from 209 barangays of 15 towns and one city were affected, although most of the floods in the areas have already abated.

She said that as of yesterday, only 307 families either displaced or still endangered by landslides from Mt. Arayat remained in two evacuation centers. Fourteen of the families were still housed in the barangay hall of San Joaquin in neighboring Magalang town, while 293 other families are in a government building at the Arayat National Park in Arayat town.

Fatalities in the province during the two weather disturbances stood at 12, all of them victims of the landslide at the height of storm Ondoy last Sept. 26. The Provincial Social Welfare and Development assured the victims’ families of P10,000 assistance each.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist said the Department of Agriculture (DA) will give 17,397 sacks of certified seeds and sacks of urea as subsidy to the farmers whose rice fields where battered by the recent heavy rains.

On the other hand, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) will distribute tilapia fingerlings to help affected fish growers recover their losses.

Despite local damages, Gov. Eddie Panlilio said that the provincial fire department was also to help in devastated areas in Metro Manila by providing one firetruck and 15 firefighters in rehabilitation efforts, particularly in Marikina.
