‘Dante’ leaves over P10-M damage to agriculture, fisheries

BALANGA CITY — The provincial disaster risk reduction management office on Friday reported that tropical storm Dante left more than P10.7 million in damages to agriculture and fisheries.

PDRRMO chief Josefina Timoteo said damage to rice crops amounted to  P10,233,870; corn – P100,575; high value crops – P326,000; and fisheries – P52,500, for a total of P10,712,945.

Damages to municipalities are: Dinalupihan at P1,735,910, Hermosa – P4,615,150; Samal – P3,985,250; Balanga City – P26,060; Bagac – P200,000 and Mariveles – P150,575.

Gov. Albert Garcia suspended Thursday classes in all levels, both public and private (modular, blended, and online) in the province.

Timoteo said there were preemptive evacuation of 35 families consisting of 144 individuals in Mariveles, Orion, and Orani before the storm’s landfall in Mariveles night of Wednesday but the next day, the evacuees were back to their homes. 

The province experienced heavy rains and strong winds Wednesday night that felled trees in some areas but these were immediately cleared. 

The PDRRMO report showed that there was power interruption in Mariveles, Orion, Pilar, Bagac, Orani, Morong, and Balanga City due to some fallen electric posts and some electrical malfunction. 

Power was restored in most areas Thursday before noon. 

Timoteo said that municipal disaster risk reduction management offices in 11 towns and one city as well as various agencies of government were on standby for mobilization, on alert and monitoring status.

On standby and close monitoring were members of the Philippine National Police, Philippine Army, Bureau of Fire Protection and Management Philippine Coast Guard, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Metro Bataan Development Authority, among  some others.
