Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark A. Villar leads the progress inspection of the Subic Freeport Expressway (SFEX) Capacity Expansion Project. One of the main features of the project is the new tunnel that serves as a vital link on this key road that connects Bataan and Zambales.
With him are DPWH Region 3 Director Roseller A. Tolentino, NLEX Corporation Chief Operating Officer Raul L. Ignacio, and Vice President for Tollway Development and Engineering Nemesio G. Castillo.
Now 85% complete, the capacity expansion of the 8.2-kilometerSFEX is aimed at improving traffic safety and easing travel to and from the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. New bridges and a tunnel are being constructed adjacent to the existing ones toincrease road capacity from one lane in each direction to two lanes in each direction.
Aside from these, expressway-standard LED lights are being installed to enhance motorists’ visibility especially when driving at night. The SFEX Capacity Expansion is seen to expedite the delivery of goods, support trade and tourism in Subic, andcomplement Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority’s (SBMA) infrastructure development.
