Soldier loses gun, cash to thieves

CABANATUAN CITY –  A soldier lost his service firearm and P30,000 cash to unidentified thieves who allegedly barged into his house in Barangay Bangad here at about 6 a.m. Monday.

Police identified the victim as Staff Sgt. Joefrey Baccal, 39, a member of the Philippine Army and resident of the said place.

In his report, Baccal said the suspects apparently gained entry through his sala and took away his gray sling bag that contained the government-issued .9mm pistol loaded with 15 live bullets and cash.

The bag also had three extra magazine assemblies with 45 pieces of ammunition, various identification and bank cards and a computer thumb drive.

Police are “currently looking for CCTV footages and potential witnesses for possible identification of the suspects,” said Cpl. Cristo Rey, investigator of the Cabanatuan City police station.

Junk shop explosion

Meanwhile, a worker was killed and another was wounded in an explosion in a junk shop in Barangay San Isidro, Zaragoza, Nueva Ecija shortly after 1 p.mMonday, police said.

The fatality was identified as Robert Dupra, 43, resident of the same village. Wounded was Marlon Villaronte, 47, of Barangay Concepcion, also of Zaragoza town.

Major Nelson Sarmiento, officerincharge of Zaragoza police station, said the two were “working together at the said junkshop and separating scrap materials,” when “the unidentified explosives suddenly exploded.”

Dupra died due to injuries in different parts of his body while Villaronte is being treated in a hospital in Cabanatuan City.
