CLARK FREEPORT — “Global design firm Populous is the lead interior designer of the New CRK Passenger Terminal Building.”
The Luzon International Premier Airport Development Corp., the operator of Clark International Airport, said in a statement Wednesday.
The announcement came a day after the Department of Transportation also announced the completion of the new passenger terminal at the end of last month, ahead of its October target date of completion.
LIPAD said Populous is an “award-winning global design firm specializing in places of mass congregation, including sports and entertainment, arenas and airports.”
It cited among Populous’ “notable projects” the upgrading of Kansai Airport in Japan’s second-biggest metropolitan area, Zhuhai International Airport, Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium, and the Philippine Arena.
“The vision of Populous for CRK is to create a new terminal that is international in its standards and operations, but local in terms of its materiality and sense of place. The region of Pampanga in which Clark is situated offers a variety of spectacular natural scenery from lava riverbeds to lush green mountains and teal blue volcanic lakes,” so was Populous quoted in the LIPAD statement.
Populous drew inspiration to select a material palette that nods towards that vibrancy and avoids the neutral, beige palette which afflicts many airports around the world, it added, quoting: “Passenger experience is at the heart of the design and it will offer a fresh new experience each time someone visits.”
LIPAD said Populous is working with Casas+Architects, the local architect, on the project.
It described Casas+Architects as one of the top architectural design firms in the country, that is “behind many of the iconic structures that dot the Manila skyline, including the tallest building in the country, the Grand Hyatt Manila in Bonifacio Global City.”
According to the DOTr, the new CRK Passenger Terminal Building is slated to commence operations in January next year as directed by Transportation Secretary Arthur P. Tugade.
