CLARK FREEPORT – Only You. Harbour Lights. The Great Pretender. Twilight Time. My Prayer.
Hear the notes. Instantly recall the singers. They can only be The Platters. Inimitable, an act all their own.
Hard to match, much harder to surpass, most naturally, so an encore becomes a must.
That’s the World-Famous Platters, happily coming back to these islands – right here in Clark, at the Widus Convention Center on September 11 with a show aptly dubbed “Encore.”
The show is officially on with Steve O’Neal Productions President Danee Samonte inking the dotted line with Widus Resort and Casino’s GM Alfred M. Reyes last Friday at the venue itself, the assembly of guests and the press singing, swaying and sashaying to Platters tunes played.
Music lovers’ interest, aye, love affair, with The Platters have not waned any after all these years – all of 60 – since they first came on air. As a matter of course, each succeeding generation has developed its own fan base of the smooth-as-silk balladeers.
Formed by Herb Reed in 1953, The Platters holds an impressive 400 recordings to date, with over 200 million records sold, performances in 91 countries, and no less than 230 awards garnered, in and out of the music industry.
In 1990, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, received into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998, and their songs Only You and The Great Pretender garnering the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999 and 2002 respectively.
Recorded in 1958, their rendition of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes is arguably the most famous version, taking Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and Number 3 on the R&B charts in 1959, staying at the top of the UK charts for five weeks from February-March that same year.
Encore, The World Famous Platters is one travel back memory lane. When songs were songs, and the singers, really singers.
